Adolphe Adam

Adolphe Charles Adam ( pronunciation: [ a'dɑ ] or because of Alsatian origin also [ a'dam ] ) ( born July 24, 1803 in Paris, † May 3, 1856 ) was a French opera and ballet composer.

Life

The son of the composer and piano virtuoso Louis Adam was a pupil of his father, Anton Reicha's students and for a short time Boieldieu at the Paris Conservatory. His career as a composer, he started with fantasies and variations on operatic melodies, then wrote arias for the smaller vaudeville theaters and several operettas and entered 1836 with the opera The postilion of Lonjumeau out who earned general acclaim. It was followed soon a series of similar works in the light comic genre, as the brewer of Preston, to faithful Shepherd, The Rose of Peronne and The King of Yvetot through which Adam has won an honorable place among the composers of the modern era.

His compositional talent was discovered and promoted at the Conservatory of François Adrien Boieldieu. After his studies, he was temporarily head of an opera company and was able to celebrate some success as a piano virtuoso. At 26, Adam wrote his first one-act opera Pierre et Catherine. Then he composed in just under two years, five more operas, most of which were in the style of opera buffa. The French Christmas carol Minuit Chrétien (O Holy Night ) was written by him. Good luck had his melodies rich and spirited orchestrated ballet Giselle.

Charles Adolphe Adam in 1844 was appointed a member of the Institut de France. In 1847 he founded a third lyric theater in Paris which is initially achieved almost unprecedented success, but as a result of the February Revolution of 1848 perished, with Adam forfeited all his considerable fortune. Soon afterwards (1849 ) he was appointed in place of his father as a teacher of composition at the Conservatoire, where he worked until his death. In all, he composed 53 operas and ballets.
