Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud

Ahmed Mohammed Mahamoud " Silanyo " (* 1936 in Burao ) is a politician in the internationally unrecognized Somaliland. He was a minister in Somalia under Siad Barre and 1984-1990 chairman of the rebel movement, the Somali National Movement, which fought against the Barre regime. In 2002 he founded the party Kulmiye and became its chairman. In the 2010 presidential election Silanyo was elected president of Somaliland for 2010-2015.

Life

Ahmed Mohammed Silanyo Mahamoud belongs to the family of the Isaaq clan, the Habar Tol precisely Yes ʿ lo who live in the regions of Togdheer and Sanaag.

He graduated as an economist from the University of Manchester and also has a degree from the London School of Economics.

Under Siad Barre was Silanyo 1969-1973 Planning Minister and Minister of Trade 1973-1978 and 1980-1982.

1984 Silanyo was determined at the Fourth Congress of the Somali National Movement, which fought as a rebel movement against the Isaaq in northern Somalia Siad Barre as its Chairman. Thus, the SNM had now a civilian leadership. Silanyo opened the organization for former officials of the Barre regime - then turned away some senior government officials such as Abd -ar- Rahman Ahmad Ali Tur Barre - and for non - Isaaq, which, however, in the SNM remained a small minority. Kulmiye was in the 2002 local elections, the presidential elections in 2003 and parliamentary elections in 2005, their second- strongest party. Behind the ruling UDUB and the larger of the two opposition parties 2003 Silanyo had lost as a presidential candidate by 80 votes difference from Dahir Riyale Kahin of the UDUB; he fought this result to at first, but finally accepted it for the sake of political stability.

The 2010 presidential election won Silanyo ( with Abdirahman Saylici as Vice President ) with 49.6 % of votes. He described the use of a recognition of Somaliland as a priority and reaffirmed the good relations with Ethiopia. He also announced that his government would focus on the development of the country.
