Al-Qassim Region

Al - Qasim al - Qaseem or even al - Qassim (Arabic منطقة القصيم, DMG minṭaqa al -Qasim, pronunciation: [ i ː ælqɑs ˁ m] ) is a province of Saudi Arabia. The 58,046 km ² province has about one million inhabitants and is situated in the center of the Arabian Peninsula. The province is considered an important agricultural region within Saudi Arabia. In al -Qasim are more than 400 towns and cities, in the capital Buraydah nearly half of all residents of the province live.

Etymology

Al -Qasim means as much as a fertile land, or land that contains trees. Typical for the region is the growing on dune Calligonum comosum from the family of buckwheat family.

Geography

The province is located in the middle of Saudi Arabia, about 400 km north- west of Riyadh. On the eastern border of the province of Riyadh is bordered to the west of the Medina province of al -Qasim. al -Qasim is on average 600-750 above sea level.

A special feature of al -Qasim is the Wadi ar - Rumma. This extends to a length of about 600 km over the whole province to Medina. It also provides the longest valley of the entire Arabian Peninsula dar.

Climate

Al -Qasim has a typical for the Arabian Peninsula hot desert climate. Dry and hot, sometimes mild summers alternate with the cold, rainy winter.

History

In the time of the Abbasids led by the province a well known pilgrimage and trade route for travelers from Persia and Mesopotamia. This S. G. Zubeida Street had its beginning in Kufa and ended in Mecca. The road was significantly expanded by Harun Al- Rashid and named after his wife Zubeida. Along the road came a number of locking points for pilgrims which, later developed into towns, such as the current capital Buraidah.

In the late 16th century, the province was conquered by the dynasty of Abu Ulayan under Rashid Al Duraiby. He appointed Buraydah the capital. Only Unaiza was further ruled by the Al- Sulaym.

The Abu Ulayan ruled the emirate until it finally by Muhanna Salih Abalkhail, leader of the Abalkhail dynasty was conquered. 1890, the Emirate of Muhammad Bin Abdullah Al Rashid conquered the Emir of Ha'il, was able in 1904 but recovered by the Abalkhail.

1907, the province was finally part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Economy

Together with tourism, agriculture is the main source of income in the region. Although al - Qassim has always been known for its fertility, succeeded here in the last few decades, the production of wheat to increase so that was the desert state of Saudi Arabia to the exporter of staple foods. Schools and hospitals, both public and private, are present as in all of Saudi Arabia in every major city. Between the two major cities and Unaizah Buraidah is the University of Qassim.
