Sfireh (formerly SIPRI, Arabic السفيرة, DMG as- Safirah; Nordsyrisches Arabic Sfire ) is a Syrian city that belongs to the province of Aleppo. It is also the administrative center of the Sfireh District. Had approximately 348 m above sea level exploiting dividend city in 2007 with a population 106 382, making it the eleventh largest city in all of Syria.
Name
The medieval geographer Yaqut al - Hamawi names the city Asfīrah ( أسفيرة ), not as- Safira ( السفيرة ), which indicates that the definite article in the modern pronunciation is a result of Hyperkorrektion.
Sfireh was known in pre-Islamic times as SIPRI. Historians suggest that the name of SIPRI from the Akkadian word could come siparru ( bronze), which shows that mined here copper and bronze has been edited.
History
In ancient times Sfireh was the origin of salt, which was collected in the nearby Dschabbuk Lake. In the Syrian civil war the city changed hands several times.
Archaeological Sites
The Sefire stelae have been found here, including the Sfire Treaty I, which mentions a deity called Elyon ( " Most High " ) from the 8th century BC.
