Albert A. Bühlmann

Albert A. Bühlmann (* May 16, 1923, † 16 March 1994) was a Swiss physician and professor of medicine. He was known primarily for his research in the field of diving medicine, especially in decompression. He worked at the University of Zurich in 1960 and founded the pressure chamber laboratory.

In the late 1950s Bühlmann began researching the Tieftaucherei. He developed decompression tables and models for the calculation of saturation processes in the human body. These models are the basis for some dive computer. Today known are his decompression tables that are created in collaboration with Max Hahn, the Bühlmann -Hahn- tables so-called.

Bühlmann also developed gas mixtures with which the diver Hannes Keller in Zurich, reached in November 1959, a diving depth of 131 meters. In 1962, he made 313 meters off the California Santa Catalina Island a record that was set just 13 years later. He was assisted by the U.S. Navy.
