Albert Henry (historian)

Albert Henry ( born March 20, 1910 in Gembloux -Grand- Manil, † February 22, 2002 in Nancy) was a Belgian linguist and medievalist.

Life and work

Henry went to school in Namur. He studied from 1928 to 1932 at the Université libre de Bruxelles Romance and Classical Philology. After military service, and a short time high school teacher, he studied from 1934 in Paris with Georges Straka and Gianfranco Contini Mario Roques, Oscar Bloch, Georges Millardet, Gustave Cohen and Joseph Bédier. 1936 and 1937 was followed by stays in Perugia. From April 1940 to May 1945 he spent together with Maurice Leroy five years in the camps officer of Weilburg, Tibor, Prenzlau, Fischbeck and Lübeck. From 1946 to 1958 he taught as a professor in Ghent from 1958 to 1976 in Brussels. Saint- John Perse was friendly terms with him.

Henry was an avowed Walloon what he both poetically ( Walloon Offrande, Andenne 1946, originated in the Prenzlauer captivity, 2nd edition 1962, 3rd edition 1990) as linguistically ( Wallon et Wallonia. Outline of a histoire sémantique, Brussels 1965, expanded 1974 and 1990 udT Outline of a histoire des mots et Wallonia Walloon ) expressed.

Henry was a member of the Belgian Academy, the Swedish Academy, the Medieval Academy of America and the Accademia dei Lincei. The Institut de France drew from two of his books.
