Alberto Seixas Santos

Jorge Alberto Seixas dos Santos ( born March 20, 1936 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese film director.

Career

He studied history and philosophy at the University of Lisbon. After 4 years in which he was already active in film clubs, he broke the studies from 1958 and has been a film critic for various newspapers ( Diário de Lisboa, Jornal de Letras e Artes, etc.). Since 1962, he studied at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques in Paris and at the London Film School.

After several documentaries he made in 1968 with the short film " Brando's Costumes " his first feature film, which has been shown only after the Carnation Revolution. On section of the film, the Swedish director Solveig Nordlund was involved, who had turned to the film since her meeting with Santos Seixas 1962.

Seixas Santos in 1969 was a co-founder of the film collective Centro Português de Cinema, a germ cell of the Cinema Novo. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, he became director of the film school of the National Conservatory in Lisbon and later director of the Instituto Português de Cinema, now the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual. In the 1980s, he was program director of Rádio e Televisão de Portugal.

In recent years, he turned back to the Government and especially the narrative cinema, even at international level.

Reception

Seixas Santos importance for the Portuguese film can not live up to its relatively few films. Although plants were like " Brando's Costumes " ( " Gentle customs " ) or " time " ( " evil " ) way for the filmmakers and the film criticism of the country, and his film " Gestos e Fragmentos " ( " gestures and fragments " ), in the 8 years after the Carnation Revolution alongside Robert Kramer also one of the most important military revolution ( Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho ) comes to word, stimulated discussions. But Seixas Santos was primarily a theoretician an important figure in the Portuguese cinema, especially the 60s and 70s. He gave important impulses and engaged at all levels and in all important institutions for the Portuguese cinema. He is still a sought-after film critic and an institution in the cultural scene of the country, in terms of cinema.
