Alcorcón

Alcorcón is a city in the metropolitan area of Madrid ( Spain), about 13 km south-west of the capital. It covers an area of 33.7 km ² and has 169,773 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

In early historical times, the area was inhabited by the Celtiberian Carpe Spartans before it was Roman and Visigothic then. About the origin of the name of the city, there are various theories. Such a derivation by the Arabic Al -Qadr is considered possible, but it is also the name as a cork oak forest (Spanish cornocal ) in question. First mentioned was the place on 28 July 1208. The place was long insignificant until the 16th century a group of monks arrived from the region of La Rioja, the remains of St. Domingo de la Calzada (11th century) carried with them and founded a monastery, which they called Santo Domingo de la Ribota. The present church of the village of Santa María la Blanca, was begun in the late 16th century and was completed in the 18th century.

In Alcorcón is the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. From the city date back a number of artists, including the comedian Mariano Mariano, Peter J. Corzo and Navaluengas.

The place is mentioned in the text of Baila el Chiki Chiki by Rodolfo Chikilicuatre, the Spanish contribution to Euro Vision Song Contest 2008.

2013, construction will start called for a Euro Vegas casinos object with the U.S. company Las Vegas Sands. The project is expected to cost 17 ​​billion euros and will be opened in 2017.
