Alex Watson (football manager)

Alexander "Alex" Watson ( * 1860 in Birmingham, † unknown ) was an English football functionary and second Secretary - Manager of Birmingham City.

Watson was the son of a successful Birmingham businessman in whose company he also worked. Watson supported the football club Birmingham City since its inception 1875. 1908 he took over the post of Secretary - Manager ( equivalent to about a sports director ) by Alfred Jones, as Birmingham was from the First Division relegated to the Second Division. In this role, he was primarily responsible for the daily administrative tasks and belonged to the five-member club committee which decided on the team's formation. The everyday training line, however, was responsible for a trainer or guide players.

After the 11th place in the Second Division 1908/ 09 1909/10 season ended on the last place. This one was forced to ask for further league affiliation for re-election and was the largest with 30 votes, the most of all the candidates, while the Tabellenvorletzte Grimsby Town (12 votes) by Huddersfield Town ( 26 votes ) was replaced. The poor athletic performance was also reflected in declining viewership noticeable that of 15,473 (1907 / 08) and 10,607 ( 1908/ 09) to 8,921 spectators in the 1909/10 season fell. For the season 1910/11 Watson was replaced by former player Bob McRoberts, who became the first manager in the club's history.
