Alexander Carter

Alexander Carter OC ( born April 16, 1909 in Montreal, † 17 February 2002 in North Bay, Ontario) was a Canadian clergyman of the Roman Catholic Church and Bishop of Sault Sainte Marie.

Life

The brother of Cardinal Gerald Emmett Carter received on 6 June 1936, the ordination. Pope Pius XII. appointed him on 10 December 1956 to the coadjutor of Sault Sainte Marie and appointed him Titular Bishop of Sita. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Montreal, Paul -Émile Léger, on 2 February 1957; Co-consecrators were Ralph Hubert Dignan, Bishop of Sault Sainte Marie, and Lawrence Patrick Whelan, Auxiliary Bishop of Montréal. After the death of Ralph Hubert Dignan he followed him on November 22, 1958 by the Bishop of Sault Sainte Marie. Between 1960 and 1986 he was chancellor of the Catholic University of Sudbury. On May 3, 1985, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation due to age. In Hanmer, Valley East, Sudbury, Ontario, the Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School was named after him.
