Alfred Wilhelm Stelzner

Alfred Wilhelm Stelzner ( born December 20 1840 in Dresden, † February 25, 1895 in Wiesbaden ) was a German geologist.

Life

Stelzner studied from 1859 to 1864 at the Mining Academy Freiberg. Among his teachers were Bernhard von Cotta, Ferdinand Reich and August Breithaupt. His thesis The granites of Geyer and Ehrenfriedersdorf and Zinnerzlagerstätten of Geyer was in 1865 as the first booklet in the series published contributions to geognostical knowledge of the Ore Mountains.

Following an internship at the Imperial Geological Institute of Vienna and expert activities in Norway in 1866, he returned to Freiberg back. Until 1870, he taught at the local mountain school and headed mineralogical exercises at the Mining Academy. As an academy inspector Stelzner managed the collections of the academy and its library.

In 1871 he received his doctorate. In the same year he went to the University of Córdoba ( Argentina), where he worked for three years as professor of mineralogy and geology, and on expeditions explored the geology of the Cordilleras. He founded in April 1871 in the Museo de Córdoba y Mineralogia Geología, which today bears his name " Dr. A. Stelzner ".

On 1 October 1874 he returned to Freiberg and entered the successor Bernhard von Cotta at the Department of Geology and Economic Geology of the Mining Academy. The professorship he held until his death, was succeeded by Richard Beck.

In order to heal a severe kidney disease, he went in January 1895 Wiesbaden. He died there on February 25.

Stelzner was the first to describe the minerals Famatinit and Franckeit. The mineral Alfredstelznerit was named after him.

Since 1879 Stelzner belonged to a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
