Ambrosius Frobenius

Ambrosius Frobenius (* 1537 in Basel, † 1595 ibid, also Ambrosius Froben ) was a Swiss printer and publisher.

Life

He sat with his younger brother Aurelius (* 1539) of his father Hieronymus Frobenius running the business. 1578-81 he printed an edition of the Talmud, which caused a sensation. It was banned by Emperor Rudolf II, but released 10 years later. 1581 he tried despite his Reformed confession to come into contact with Rome in order to develop the local market for his Talmud. 1585 joined Froben his business to his son, Jerome, and the son Jonathan Meyer. stood in 1587 the name Froben for the last time in the Frankfurt trade fair catalog.

Family

He was a son of the book printer Hieronymus Frobenius from the Swiss publisher and officials Frobenius family, descended from the humanist and book printer Johannes Frobenius.
