Ames is a small town in Liberty County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States of America.

Geography

The city is situated in southeastern Texas on Leon River, to the east is about 80 miles from Louisiana, located in the south about 60 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 8.2 km ², without significant water surface. The distance to Houston in the southwest is about 80 kilometers.

History

The city was named after William Ames, an early settler in the area and later railway official. The first post office opened in 1893 and the first telephone call came into existence in 1905. Links to the public power grid got the place until 1941. The school, which was supervised until then by two teachers, closed in 1940 and the students were driven daily to neighboring Gatesville. The post office was closed in 1957, as the only church in town.
