Liberty County (Texas)
The Liberty County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Liberty.
Geography
The County is located in East Texas, is about 50 km from Louisiana, 40 km from the Gulf of Mexico and is part of the Houston - Sugar Land - Baytown Metropolitan Area. It has an area of 3046 km ², of which 43 km ² water surface are. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Polk County, Hardin County, Jefferson County, Chambers County, Harris County, Montgomery County and San Jacinto County.
History
Liberty County was formed in 1836 as an original county. It was named after the city and later the seat of the County Administration Liberty.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000, lived in Liberty County 70 154 people in 23,242 households and 17,756 families. The population density was 23 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 78.90 percent White, 12.82 percent Black or African American, 0.47 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 6.03 percent from other races groups; 1.43 percent were descended from two or more races. 10.92 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 23,242 households out of which 38.1 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 60.5 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers and 23.6 percent were non-families. 20.4 percent of all households and 8.9 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.23 persons.
27.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 to 24, 31.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 38,361, and the median income for a family was $ 43,744. Males have a median income of $ 37,957, women $ 22,703. The per capita income was $ 15,539. 11.1 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
