Bexar County, Texas

The Bexar County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( County Seat) is located in San Antonio.

Geography

The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 3255 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Kendall County, Guadalupe County, Wilson County, Atascosa County, Medina County and Bandera County.

History

Bexar County was established on December 20, 1836 and almost covered the entire western part of the Republic of Texas, including the disputed areas in the west of New Mexico north of Wyoming. After the end of sovereignty 128 counties were established on its territory.

The County has by his then capital called his name San Antonio de Béxar. This formed one of 23 municipalities ( cities with self-management / administrative sub-units ) of Texas at the time of its independence. In San Antonio de Béxar - Originally Villa de San Fernando de Béxar - was the first civilian government, which was formed in the province of Texas under Spanish rule. The city was founded in 1731 by 55 residents of the Canary Islands near the system of missions along the San Antonio River. The new settlement was named after the Presidio San Antonio de Béxar, the Spanish military base, which protected the missions, named. The Presidio, which was located at San Pedro Springs, was founded in 1718 and named for Viceroy Balthasar Manuel de Zúñiga y Guzmán Sotomayor y Sarmiento, second son of the Duke of Béxar ( a city in Spain).

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,392,931 people in Bexar County in 488 942 households and 345 681 families. The population density was 431 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 68.86 percent White, 7.18 percent African American, 0.80 percent Native American, 1.61 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 17.80 percent from other races groups; 3.64 percent were descended from two or more races. 54.35 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 488 942 households out of which 36.6 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 50.5 percent were married couples living together, 15.5 percent were single mothers and 29.3 percent were non-families. 24.0 percent of all households and 7.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.33 persons.

28.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.7 percent between 18 to 24, 30.6 percent between 25 and 44, 19.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 38,328, and the median income for a family was $ 43,724. Males have a median income of $ 30,756, women $ 24,920. The per capita income was $ 18,363. 12.7 percent of families and 15.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
