Calhoun County (Texas)

The Calhoun County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( County Seat) is located in Port Lavaca.

Geography

The County is located southwest of the geographic center of Texas and bordering the Gulf of Mexico. It has an area of ​​2673 square kilometers, of which 1346 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the County Jackson County, Aransas County, Refugio County and Victoria County.

History

Calhoun County was formed in 1846 from parts of Jackson County, Matagorda County and Victoria County. It was named for John C. Calhoun, 7th Vice President of the United States.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000, lived in Calhoun County 20,647 people in 7,442 households and 5,574 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer.
