Cleveland is a city in Liberty County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the northwestern corner of the county, in southeast Texas, is in the south about 100 km from the Gulf of Mexico, to the east about 120 km west of Louisiana and has a total area of 12.5 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Built in 1854, Father Peter La Cour near the present city of a church around which a small settlement was formed. 1878, a small community had formed and Charles Lander Cleveland donated land to a railway station on the Houston East & West Texas Railway (now Southern Pacific Railroad ) to obtain. Then the place was named after him.

Demographics

According to the census of 2000, there were 7,605 people in 2,645 households and 1,758 families. The population density was 610.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 58.65 % White, 27.13 % African American, 0.33 % Native American, 0.59 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 11.58 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.72% were of mixed descent, and 20.51 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,645 households, 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 42.4 % were married couples living together. 19.0% were single mothers and 33.5 % were non-families. 29.2 % of all households were single-person households, and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.27 persons to.

27.4 % of the population were under 18 years old, 10.7 % from 18 to 24, 29.6% 25-44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 101.7 males.
