Amilcare Ponchielli

Amilcare Ponchielli ( August 31, or September 1, 1834 in Paderno Fasolaro at Cremona; † January 16 or January 17, 1886 in Milan ) was an Italian composer and music educator.

Life

At the age of nine years Ponchielli began his training at the Milan Conservatory, which he successfully completed in 1854. After that he worked in Cremona as organist of St. Hilary 's Church and as maestro sostituto ( Kapellmeister ) at the Teatro della Concordia. With Ruggero Manna (1808-1864), the cathedral and opera conductor of Cremona, whom he had a personal friendship.

On September 17, 1856, the opera I Promessi Sposi, the Ponchielli had written together with the librettist Giuseppe Aglio and Cesare Stradivari, premiered in Cremona. Alfredo Colombani reported in the Gazzetta Musicale di Milano: The success recorded from as early as in the overture; she was so enthusiastic applause, that the Maestro was immediately called several times to the stage.

Two more premieres ( Beltrando di Bormio in Turin and La Savoiarda in Cremona ), however, remained without success; Ponchielli ran into financial difficulties. From 1861 to 1874 he headed the Banda della Guardia in Piacenza Nazionale, a brass band, for the month he wrote two new compositions - a total of more than 150 works. Despite the degrading working conditions he fulfilled conscientiously his artistic mission. In 1874 he settled in Milan; on June 26, he married the soprano Teresina Brambilla ( 1845-1921 ), which in the re-enactment of - had sung Lucia Betrothed at the Teatro Dal Verme - by Emilio Praga lyrically revamped.

Amilcare Ponchielli Domkapellmeister 1881 in Bergamo, 1883 professor of composition at the Milan Conservatory. He was a respected and popular teacher. Among his pupils were Giacomo Puccini and Pietro Mascagni. Mascagni Ponchielli describes in his memoirs as amiable, disinterested sponsors and consultants.

Best known Ponchielli is today through his music for the opera La Gioconda; the allegorical ballet contribution from the third act, the dance of the hours earned request concert popularity. The libretto by Arrigo Boito wrote La Gioconda. It is based on the 1835, first performed in Paris Drama Angelo, tyran de Padoue the French poet Victor Hugo, whose stage works stimulated numerous librettists and composers to his own works.

1892 Ponchielli Memorial was built in Cremona.
