Amilly (Loiret)

Amilly is a commune with 11,833 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Loiret in the Centre region. It is the administrative seat of the eponymous canton in the arrondissement of Montargis Amilly.

Geography

The municipality is located southwest of Montargis. It is further surrounded by Châlette -sur -Loing in the northwest, Paucourt in the north, La Chapelle -Saint- Sepulchre in the northeast, La Selle -en- Hermoy in the east, Saint- Germain -des- Près in the southeast, Conflans -sur -Loing in the south, Mormant -sur- Vernisson in the southwest and Villemandeur in the West. The city lies on the River Loing and the Canal de Briare.

History

Since the 4th century, it is known to the Gallo- Roman settlement Amelium. From the 12th century the town was ruled by the Courtenay family.

In the 13th century ( 1243 ), the first Dominican convent was established in Amilly.

1983 ancient grave sites were discovered with different skeletons woman in excavations.
