AMS-TeX

AMS-TeX is a format for the typesetting program TeX. It was developed 1983-1985 by Michael Spivak for the American Mathematical Society (AMS ). Although AMS-TeX has long been no longer being developed, about 10 % of all mathematical articles in AMS-TeX were still written in 2007.

It is based on plain TeX (especially work all plain TeX macros in AMS-TeX ) and extends this complicated macros for typesetting formulas. AMS-TeX is not compatible with LaTeX. From the union of AMS- TeX LaTeX initially created the standalone format AMS- LaTeX and later the amsmath package for LaTeX. The latter has largely replaced its predecessor.
