Anahuac is a city and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Chambers County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in southeast Texas, about 75 kilometers east of Houston, at the northeast shore of Trinity Bay, and thus has access to about 45 kilometers from the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast. Anahuac has a total area of 5.5 square kilometers without significant water surface.

History

The town was named after an area in Mexico. The first inhabitants of this area were the Atakapan Indians. 1721 explored the Frenchman Jean Baptiste de La Harpe this area. The area under the name of Perry 's Point became known, named after Colonel Henry Perry, who in 1816 there organized a military post. In October 1830, the Mexican commander Colonel John Davis Bradburn took three officers and 40 soldiers, the area for Mexico. In January 1831 General Manuel de Mier y Terán christened the town officially in the name of Anahuac.

1862 here is a small outpost of the Confederacy was established. The first commercially important event was in 1894 when Jesse and Charles R. Cumming 1894, the first sawmill was built. The first school district was established in 1917. The Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1963 about 25 kilometers southeast of the city set up by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. 1989 organized by the local Chamber of Commerce, the first Gatorfest that brought 14,000 visitors to the Fort Anahuac Park and is organized annually since then.
