Andy Potts

Andy Potts ( born December 28, 1976 in Hershey, Pennsylvania) is an American triathlete and multiple Ironman champion (2010, 2012, 2013 ).

Career

Potts began his sporting career as a swimmer originally. From 1995 to 1997 he was a member of the U.S. Swim Team. The biggest success in 1995 was winning the bronze in the 400 meters individual medley at the Summer Universiade in Fukuoka. In 1996, he missed at the in-country elimination fights, the so-called Trials, in fourth place over the same distance just to qualify for the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. In the years 1998/99 he was captain of the swim team at the University of Michigan, where he studied English. Reasons of age, but he then turned to athletics and finally with the goal, but to be able to still go in the Olympics at the start of 2003, the triathlon.

In his first season he moved up with good finishes at World Cup events in the top 100 in the world ranking of ITU. With a 11th place at the discharged Madeira World Cup, he qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens. In Olympic competition in Vouliagmeni he was after swimming in the lead, but then fell back and ended it ranked 22 The post-Olympic year he completed in 9th place in the World Cup standings.

In 2006 he was elected as a member of the U.S. National Triathlon Team World Champion and in the same year in the U.S. for triathlete of the year. The 2007 season began with the first winning the U.S. Championship. In July 2007 he won the competition at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and was two months later at the World Championships in Hamburg as Elftplatzierter best Americans. The season he finished by winning the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2007 and was re-elected triathlete of the year.

With his victory at the Pan American Games Potts was automatically qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. In 2010, he scored his first victory on the long distance (3.86 km swim, 180.2 km bike ride and 42.195 km running) in the Ironman in Idaho.

Potts is married to the former Canadian gymnast Lisa Simes since 30 January 2004.
