Aníbal Ibarra

Aníbal Ibarra ( born March 1, 1958 in Lomas de Zamora, Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine lawyer and politician. From 7 August 2000 until 7 March 2006, he was mayor of the capital, Buenos Aires.

Life

Aníbal Ibarra comes from Lomas de Zamora, located in the catchment area of Buenos Aires. He studied law and worked first in the prosecutor before he goes with the new party Frepaso in politics. Ibarra is first a member of the City Council, in 2000 he was elected Mayor of Buenos Aires wins it in the first round against the former Federal Minister of Economy Domingo Cavallo. In 2003 he was re-elected. This time he wins the election in the second round against the center-right politician Mauricio Macri. Ibarra was supported in his campaign by President Néstor Kirchner.

On 30 December 2004, a major fire in the nightclub República Cromañón kills 194 people. The disaster led to a wave of charges against officials of the city. Ibarra was accused of tolerating or ignoring vulnerabilities. On November 14, 2005, a Commission of Inquiry suspended him for four months. He accused the opposition out to have tampered with the families of the victims to ruin his career. In response to his (provisional ) suspension, he announced not withdraw before the end of the investigations. His deputy Jorge Telerman took over the business.

On 7 March 2006, the Commission decided to study the release of Ibarra. 10 of the 15 members voted in favor, 4 against it, it was one abstention. The indictment originally applied ten years ban from public office, the Commission deliberated on max. six years, finally there was, however, no decision.
