Anna Maria Dengel

Anna Dengel (born 16 March 1892 in Steeg, † April 17, 1980 in Rome) was an Austrian doctor. She was the founder of the " Medical Mission Sisters", a religious congregation of sisters from all continents ( except Australia ) with which they built 48 hospitals worldwide. When she completed her studies in 1919, she was one of the first female doctors in the Tyrol.

Life

Anna Dengel studied in Austria, France and Ireland (Cork) medicine. In 1920 she received her doctorate. In Rawalpindi, she worked in obstetrics, as the women were allowed to accept any medical help for men on religious grounds. She traveled several times to England and the USA and founded on September 30, 1925 in Washington their own medically-oriented Order. After her death in 1980 she was buried at his own request in the tomb of the Institute Congregation of Jesus in the Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome, though she was not a member of the same.
