Anna van Egmont

Anna of Egmond ( Dutch: Anna van Buren; baptized in March 1533 in Grave, † March 24, 1558 in Breda ) - coming out of the house Egmond - was in its own right Countess of Buren, Leerdam and Lingen, Lady of Egmond, IJsselstein, St.Maartensijk, Kortgene, Kranendonk, Borssele, Grave, Odijk and the High glory Jaarsveld.

Life

Anna was the only child and heiress of the captain - general of the Netherlands Maximilian of Egmond and his wife Françoise de Lannoy († 1562), mistress of Lannoy, Santes and Drongen. She followed her father as suo jure Countess of Buren, Leerdam and Lingen, etc. 1548.

Anna came from one of the oldest and most prominent families of the Netherlands which included the Dutch freedom fighter Lamoraal of Egmond and Count of Horn, the latter was a son of her aunt Anna of Egmond († 1574 ). Acquired from her father county Lingen sold Anna when she married, for 120,000 gold florins to the Emperor Charles V.

On July 8, 1551, she married in Buren William I of Orange -Nassau, who was well off as the heir of the Principality of Orange in the Netherlands. By his marriage with the heiress Wilhelm acquired their extensive lands and the title of Count of Buren and gentlemen of Egmond. At the time of marriage William as his wife was the same age, just Catholic.

The surviving letters show that the marriage was extremely happy. The couple lived alternately at the castles Buren and Breda. After the untimely death of Anna's 25 years her surviving children were handed over to the courtyard of the Dutch governor Mary of Hungary for education.

Anna is still the only native of Holland wife of a Dutch rulers of the House of Orange. The title of Count of Buren leads to this day the Dutch royal respectively. Due to Anna's connection with William of Orange Boers (Gelderland) today called Oranjestad. After Anna several schools are named in the Netherlands.
