Antipope Felix V

Amadeus VIII, called " the Peaceable " (Italian: "Il Pacifico ", born September 4, 1383 to Chambery, † January 7, 1451 in Geneva), the Duke of Savoy and later as Felix V, the last Catholic antipope was.

Life

Amadeus was the son of Count Amadeus VII of Savoy and his wife Bona, daughter of the Duke Jean de Berry. He succeeded his father in 1391 as Count of Savoy.

In 1401 he bought Odo of Thoire and Villars from the county of Geneva. His heirs, however, refused to give him the possession of the county. 1424, after 23 years of struggle and processes he bought the pretender its rights to the county from final.

On February 19, 1416, he was elevated by Emperor Sigismund to the Duke of Savoy, since 1418 he was also Prince of Piedmont.

The Duke was politically quite successful, but in 1434 turned from politics and religious life. He handed his son into office and retired with six knights in a monastery on Lake Geneva, where he founded the Order of Moritz, a knightly order of moderately long stock.

When Pope Eugene IV in 1439 transferred the Council of Basel to Ferrara, the council and the remaining part was divided in Basel deposed on November 5, Eugen and dialed in a few hour-long conclave Amadeus Pope. He resided in Geneva, Lausanne and Basel, but was only recognized in Aragon, Hungary, Bavaria and Switzerland, so he resigned his office on April 7, 1449 where he was the resignation facilitates the granting of multiple privileges. Until his death in 1451 he was a Cardinal Bishop of Sabina and Geneva. He is considered the last historical Antipope.
