Antonello Gagini

Antonello Gaginis (* 1478 in Palermo, † 1536 ) was an important Italian sculptors of the Renaissance in Sicily.

Family

His family sometimes spelled Gangini or Gaggini to mid 15th century, settled in Sicily. Gaginis was the son of the sculptor Domenico Gaginis, who was also his teacher. He was the father of Giacomo Gaggini, Fazio Gaggini Gaggini Vincenzo and Giovanni Domenico Gaggini (1503-1567), who had also worked as a sculptor in Sicily.

Works

Antonello Gaginis was the creator of some church sculptures in Sicily, especially in the region of Messina. In particular he is known for his religious figures: So in the Cappella di San Giovanni Battista in the cathedral of Messina. The original figure was created in 1525 by Antonello Gaginis.

In the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia in the Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo you will find a large selection of his works, including Annunciation (the Annunciation ), Madonna con il Bambino (Madonna with Child), Madonna della Neve ( Our Lady of Snow) and Apparizione della Croce a Costantino ( Release the Cross of Constantine ). He also worked on the Cathedral of Palermo.
