António Vitorino

António Vitorino [ ɐntɔni̯u viturinu ] ( born January 12, 1957 in Lisbon, Portugal) is a Portuguese socialist politician. From 1999 to 2004 he was European Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs.

António Vitorino reached the Master of Law and Political Science at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon.

In 1980 he became a member of parliament and there until 1984 member of the Committee for European Integration. 1984 to 1985 he was Secretary of State for Parliamentary Affairs, 1985-1986 Chairman of the Constitutional Committee of the Portuguese Parliament. In 1986 he moved as Secretary of State and representatives of the President of Portugal to Macau until he returned in 1989. From 1989 to 1994 he was the Portuguese Constitutional Court. In 1994 he became a member of the European Parliament, but in 1995 went back to Portugal to be (until 1997) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense.

In September 1999 he was appointed European Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs. The office, he handed over in November 2004.

António Vitorino is married and has two children. He has written several books in political science.
