Archduke Rudolf of Austria (1788–1831)

Rudolph Johann Joseph Rainer of Austria (born 8 January 1788 in Florence, † July 24, 1831 in Baden bei Wien ) was ( titular ) Archduke of Austria, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Olomouc and Cardinal of the house of Habsburg- Lorraine.

Life

Rudolph was the youngest son of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, later Emperor Leopold II. Initially, he seems to have embarked on a military career, for a short time (1802-1809) he was the owner of the infantry regiment no. 16 However, in 1856 he entered into holy orders, and he was raised in the consistory of June 4, 1818 by Pope Pius VII to the cardinal of the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio. In 1819 he was appointed Archbishop of Olomouc.

Rudolph died at the age of 73 years while bathing in Vienna and was buried in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna. His heart was buried in the Church of St. Wenceslas Olomouc.

Patron

Rudolph was a great friend and supporter of the arts. He himself played the piano and composed well. Around 1808, he became a student of Ludwig van Beethoven, and was also the only one Beethoven at this time was still teaching. From 1809 he paid him an annual pension of 1,500 thalers to keep him in Vienna. Beethoven dedicated to him many important works, including:

In addition, the Missa Solemnis, Op 123 was to Rudolph's enthronement as Archbishop of Olomouc.
