Ariarathes III of Cappadocia

Ariarathes III. († 220 BC) was the first ruler of Cappadocia, who took the title of king ( basileus ).

Ariarathes III. was around 255 BC his father Ariaramna II, who had probably managed to shake off the BC co-regent Seleucid suzerainty. Ariarathes III. married Stratonike, the daughter of Antiochus II Seleukidenkönigs, and called himself since about 250 BC King. After his father's death by 225 BC, he took over the sole rule in Cappadocia.

In the innerseleukidischen disputes over the throne Ariarathes allied with Antiochus Hierax, which, however, could not prevail against his brother Seleucus II. Nevertheless Ariarathes ' rule is considered successful; he should have, according to Diodorus, won Kataonien on Antitaurus for Cappadocia. Successor as king of Cappadocia was his son Ariarathes IV Eusebes
