Armeemarschsammlung

Under the Armeemarsch collection (actually: The Royal Prussian Army march Collection ) abbreviated, AMS, one understands the basic catalog work of German military march music. The basis for the creation of this overview is a corresponding decree of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. . , made in 1817 in this Decree states:

" To get the regiments in the army in the choice of good military music to help, I can organize a selection of good music and each regiment determines a collection of them ... "

This army march collection that contains the Prussian and Austrian and Russian Marches is divided into three collections, where the marches are distinguished according to purpose of use or performance, these subgroups are indicated with Roman numerals.

  • Collection I: Slow Marches for infantry (115 marches )
  • Collection II: Parade marches for infantry (269 marches )
  • Collection III: cavalry marches (149 marches )

All marches that were taken in the army march collection, have an official number designation of a Roman numeral ( collection ) and an Arabic number ( list number in the collection ). The number of existing marches is not consistent with the most recent numbers of the count, as there are still some post-recorded works in every collection that were switched on in addition reduction of lower case letters in the existing census (eg II 45a). It is also quite possible that individual marches are listed in more than one collection.

Examples:

  • Präsentiermarsch (AM I, 1a and AT III, 1a)
  • March Duke of Brunswick ( also known as "Army March No. 9" known) (AM I, 9)
  • March of the regiment Duke of Brunswick (AM I, 72)
  • Prussia's Glory (AM II, 240)
  • Königgrätzer march (AM II, 195)

Army march collection

In addition to Armeemarsch collection at the initiative of military musician Hermann Schmidt Army march collection was compiled in 1925. Besides some works from the collection Armeemarsch It also includes the since that date -added newly composed or assumed marches. The preparation of the army march collection ended in 1945 with the end of World War II. It is divided - in contrast to Armeemarsch collection - into four subgroups:

  • Collection I: Präsentiermärsche for infantry (8 marches )
  • Collection II: Parade marches for infantry (38 marches )
  • Collection III: cavalry marches in step ( slow tempo ) (17 march )
  • Collection IIIB: cavalry marches in canter (fast pace ) (83 march )

As mentioned, some military marches both a designation in the Army and the Army march collection, eg

  • Prussia's Glory (AM II, 240 and HM II, 98)
  • Yorck shear march (AM II, 37, and HM II, 5)

The two collections at the present time

Especially from the much older Armeemarsch collection, much of the work has been lost in the original or only in fragments. In particular, the destruction of the Prussian State Archives in Potsdam in 1945, played an important role. To make matters worse, that a large part of the older compositions just do not have the title and / or its composers are unknown. However, since many of these works are of Russian origin, there is the prospect they rediscover in Russian archives. Private associations and the military music service of the Armed Forces have long been trying not forgotten to let this little-known marches of the collection and also to complete again.
