Arnold I of Cologne

Arnold I. (* 1100, † April 3, 1151 in Cologne) was from 1137 to 1151 Archbishop of Cologne.

Life

Arnold's origin is not fully understood. It is believed that he came from lower Rhenish nobility. Are mentioned in various sources, the gender of Randerath and from Merxheim. To 1124 he was dean of St. Andrew in Cologne. After the death of two archbishops in 1137, he was elected even in December 1137 the new archbishop of Cologne. On March 7, 1138 he participated in the second election of Conrad III. king of Germany in Koblenz part. His ordained Arnold on 3 April 1138. According to 1138 he was on the Drachenfels Castle Drachenfels build.

1146 called a monk Radulf, also called Raoul, who, like Bernard of Clairvaux to have been a Cistercian, up in Cologne and in other places of the Rhineland Jews to pogroms. Thereupon Arnold I turned to Bernard of Clairvaux for help in this matter, which he received. Bernhard rebuked Radulf and instructed him to return to the monastery.

Also in 1146 Arnold I. granted to the Jews of Cologne on the eve of the Second Crusade protection in the cloud castle against encroachments by the people. The clouds castle was built in 1118 by the Cologne Archbishop Friedrich von Schwarzburg to secure its territory to the south. It is like the Drachenfels in the Seven Mountains.

Arnold I was on November 10, 1147 during the visit of Pope Eugene III. present in Trier. 1149 he was appointed by Eugene III. suspended because of simony and neglect of his official duties.

Arnold died on April 3, 1151 in Cologne and was buried in the church of St. Andrew.
