Arthur Augustus Zimmerman

Arthur Augustus Zimmerman ( born June 11, 1869 Camden (New Jersey), † October 22, 1936, Atlanta ( Georgia)) was an American racing driver and winner of the first World Cup Sprint 1893 in Chicago.

Zimmerman, later known as a racing driver " Zimmy ", was born the son of a real estate agent. Was taken early on the boy who attended a military school, on through a versatile sporting talent in athletics. At 17 he started cycling on a unicycle. In 1889 he won his first cycling race.

Already in 1890, Zimmerman took a first place 45 times a year later he switched to the Niederrad. He won, among others, the American championship over the half-mile and set a world record for the quarter mile in 29.4 seconds at.

1892 Zimmerman first came to Europe and started in England, where he won several titles, and in Germany, where he went to Berlin. Later, he also traveled to race in France, where he as the Grand Prix de l' UVF won, Scotland and Australia. In 1894 he turned professional and made in consequence many more world records. He was one of the first cyclist who could live by his profession by his name was marketed for " Zimmy Shoes" or " Zimmy clothes ".

Two years later, he ended his racing career, after he had won over 1000 victories, and became a merchant. Ten years later, he competed at the request of organizers in Paris again a bike race, but without success.

Arthur Augustus Zimmerman died in Atlanta at the age of 67 years.
