Arthur Byron

Arthur William Byron ( born April 3, 1872 in Brooklyn, New York, † July 17, 1943 in Hollywood, California ) was an American actor.

Life and career

Arthur Byron was the son of actor couple Oliver Doud Byron (1842-1920) and Kate Crehan, his mother was a sister of popular actress Ada Rehan. Byron began his acting career in the theater. He was one of the busiest actors on Broadway and appeared there in 1894-1939 to almost 50 pieces. He also worked as a writer and producer of plays. In the 1930s he also worked as a film actor in a total of 26 films. He usually played supporting roles in respectable figures such as generals, doctors or scientists. In the horror classic The Mummy, he played in 1932 the prestigious archaeologist Sir Joseph Whemple, the same year he was seen as a prison escape on the side of Spencer Tracy in 20,000 years in Sing Sing.

Byron was a founding member of the Actors' Equity Association in 1913 and was elected its president in 1938. His first wife Lillian Hall, he married in 1898. From his second marriage to Kathryn Keys four children came.
