Asa Fitch (Representative)

Asa Fitch ( born November 10, 1765 in Groton, Connecticut; † August 24, 1843 in Salem, New York) was an American officer, physician and politician. Between 1811 and 1813, he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Asa Fitch grew up during the British colonial period. He received a limited education. During the Revolutionary War he served as a sergeant in Captain Livingston's company. After the war he studied medicine and practiced in Duanesburg and Salem. Between 1799 and 1810 worked as a justice of the peace and 1810-1821 as District Judge. In 1806 he became president of the Washington County Medical Society, a position which he held until 1826. Politically, he was a member of the Federalist Party.

In the congressional elections of 1810, Fitch was in the sixth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded Herman Knickerbocker and Robert Le Roy Livingston took on March 4, 1811 which had previously together represent the district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Since he gave up for reelection two years later, he retired after the March 3, 1813 out of the Congress.

After that he worked as a doctor again. He died on August 24, 1843 in Salem and was then buried in the Evergreen Cemetery.
