Sporting career

Slatews first international competition was the European Championship 1980 in Belgrade. He stepped in the middleweight division at up to 75 kg and took 355 kg in the first place before Nedeltscho Kolev and Alexander Perwi. Thus Slatew was the same used in his first international competition year for the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980. There he won a gold medal with 360 kg again before Perwi and Kolev.

Slatew Then moved to the light heavyweight division to 82.5 kg, where he became the main rivals of Jurik Vardanyan. 1981 World Championships in Lille could Vardanyan, who was stronger in pushing, Slatew still point with 392.5 kg to 372.5 kg on the second place. Both pulled 170 kg, but Vardanyan met with a new world record 223.0 kg, with 20 kg more entered the duel rating as Slatews 202.5 kg.

Since Vardanyan took at the 1982 World Cup in the Middle Heavyweight 90 kg, won Slatew 400 kg in gold. 1983 came again to encounter between the two rivals. At the World Championships in Moscow both competed in the light heavyweight division. After both have coped with the same load of 180 kg in the snatch again Vardanyan won 2.5 kg more in pushing against Slatew with 390.0 kg gold medal.

Due to the Olympic boycotts of the socialist states in 1984 Slatew could not participate in these games. The gold medal in the light heavyweight division to 82.5 kg went to Becheru Petre, who scored 355.0 kg in single combat, a load would have been certainly be trusted the Slatew.

The next duel of Slatew and Wardanjan 1985 in Södertälje, located Vardanyan was able to secure a second time with his superiority in pushing all three gold medals. Slatew won silver three times. After resignation of Vardanyan won Slatew the World Cup at home in Sofia in 1986 sovereign, by hiring Wardanjans world record in the duel of 405.0 kg.

In his last World Cup in 1987 Slatew could win with 375.0 kg in single combat the bronze medal. After two Bulgarian gold medalists was detected in the lower classes of doping at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Bulgaria withdrew its entire team back. So Slatew was taken the chance for an Olympic medal again.

Others

Slatew is since 2000 an honorary citizen of Plovdiv. He owns a dairy and is now engaged in the production of cheese.
