Assan Basayev ( Kazakh Асан Базаев, born February 22, 1981 in Astana ) is a Kazakh cyclist.

Career

As an amateur, Basayev was in 2003 make with some victories for the Kazakh national selection attention to himself: he won two stages of the Vuelta a las Americas in Mexico, taking a day section of the Cinturón a Mallorca and stages of the Grand Prix Guillaume Tell in Switzerland and Bulgaria tour. In the jersey of his home country Kazakhstan, he won the title in the time trial cycling - Asia Championships also one of the greatest successes of his career.

The following season, Basayev was able to retract no victory, but with stage finishes among the top three at the Vuelta Ciclista de Chile, the Tour of Japan and the Tour of China, he reached more impressive results. Estimate is even higher were two second places at the Tour of Qinghai Lake and a third place at the Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen. The greatest success for Basayev was in 2005, but the surprising third place at the Tour de l' Avenir, the "small" Tour de France for young riders.

In April 2006, he then joined the Spanish ProTour team Liberty Seguros - Würth. He started among others at Paris- Roubaix and the Tour of Catalonia. Since the team was involved in the doping scandal Fuentes, the sponsor terminated the contract. Since July 2006, the team went under the name of Astana - Würth, the first ProTour victory was Basajews success on the first leg of the tour in Germany in 2006. A consistently good season he showed in 2009. A first result as stages at Tirreno- Adriatico - ninth was followed by a 16th place at Milan - Sanremo and a seventh place in a section of the Three Days of De Panne, which he finished in twelfth. Basayev took this year even with the spring classics Tour of Flanders and Gent- Wevelgem part. At the Tour de Romandie he showed as stages - as well as his third Sprint class as well as with two other top ten placings on stages of the Tour de Luxembourg, a fourth place finish in the prologue and the fifth overall. At the Tour de Suisse, which he originally wanted to go, he was unable to attend, however, due to a team-internal lock. Basayev had failed to disclose his whereabouts, doping control and was pulled for two weeks by his team from circulation.
