For the fourth consecutive year, there were at major events the same intake on the first two places: Kenenisa Bekele ahead of his compatriot Sileshi Sihine. This result was at the Games in Athens in 2004 and also at the World Athletics Championships in 2005 and 2007. Bekele's victory was the fourth consecutive Olympic victory of Ethiopia over 10,000 meters. For the first time were the runners in the first four places below the current Olympic record.
