Atli Dam

Atli Pætursson Dam, or Atli Dam ( born September 12, 1932 in Tvøroyri, Faroe Islands; † 7 February 2005 in Tórshavn ) was a Faroese politician ( Javnaðarflokkurin ).

He was a total of 16 years Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands and 21 years of Social Democratic Party Chairman Javnaðarflokkurin.

Atli Dam was the son of Petur Mohr Dam and Sigrid Ragnhild ( born Strøm from Trongisvágur ). His daughter Helena Dam á Neystabø ( born 1955 ) is an important woman in Faroese politics. 1964 ended Atli Dam his training as a mechanical engineer.

Atli Dam was from 1970 to 1981 Head of Government of the Faroe Islands. Another term lasted from 1985 to 1989 and his third from 1991 to 1993. He resigned for health reasons in favor of its successor Marita Petersen from office.

At the same time, he was from 1970 to 1994 Løgtingsabgeordneter ( 1970 to 1990 for the constituency Suðuroy and 1990-94 for Südstreymoy ) and one of the two Faroese representatives in the Danish Folketing 1990-1994. In the Nordic Council, he represented his country from 1989 until 1991.

From 1972 to 1993 he was also chairman of the Social Democrats and Faroese counted, like his father, one of the heavyweights of Faroese politics. Atli Dam was considered especially skillful negotiator. Among his greatest political successes, the transfer of authority over the Faroese mineral resources in 1992 by the then Danish Minister Poul Schlüter is expected to the Faroese government autonomy. Thus, for example, possess the Faroe Islands the disposal of the suspected in the continental shelf oil fields - an industry that on success of the holes (as of July 2006) to the economic independence of his country could result from Denmark.
