August Johann Gottfried Bielenstein

August Johann Gottfried Bielenstein ( lett: August Bīlenšteins ) (born 20 Februarjul / March 4 1826greg in Jelgava ( Latvian: .. .. Jelgava ), † 23 Junijul / July 6 1907greg ) was a deutschbaltischer linguist, folklorist, ethnographer and theologian. He studied at the University of Halle as numerous other well-known pastors in the Baltics, studied from 1846 and his doctorate in 1850 at the University of Dorpat ( estn: Tartu). In 1852 he succeeded his father as pastor of New Autz in Courland. From 1867 worked Bielenstein as an evangelical pastor of Doblen, ( lett: Dobele ) in the Kurzeme ( German: Kurland ).

The University of Königsberg in 1883 awarded him an honorary doctorate. He was president from 1864 to 1895 and then Honorary President of the Latvian Literärischen society. In this role Bielenstein prompted the processing of a Latvian dictionary ( by Ulmann, Riga 1872, Vol 1) and took over the linguistic and exegetical review of the Latvian Bible ( Jelgava 1877). The magazine of the Latvian Literärischen society contains many valuable essays by Bielenstein.

Bielenstein was editor of the largest newspaper in Latvian Latviešu Avīzes and member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He was author of many works in the fields of linguistics and ethnography. He promoted the collection of Daina, issued collections, exploring the traditional wood construction. He also examined the castle hill in order to assign them to the descriptions in ancient chronicles can. Although Bielenstein made ​​many adjoining decisive contributions to the study of the Latvian language and culture, he was also a fierce opponent of the Young Latvians and ardent defender of the German Baltic tradition.

His valuable library was the Russian Revolution of 1905 to the victim.

On the 100th anniversary of his death in 2007, there were several events in Dobele and Riga, and the unveiling of a plaque .. In 2008 was an exhibition in the Estonian National Library in Tallinn instead.
