August Michaelis

August Karl Arnold Michaelis ( born December 26, 1847 in Bierbergen, today a district of Hohenhameln; † January 31, 1916 in Rostock ) was a German chemist.

Life and work

Michaelis studied chemistry at Göttingen and Jena, where he received his doctorate in 1870. In Karlsruhe, he was after his habilitation first private and then in 1880 the first professor of organic chemistry at the Technical University of Aachen. 1881 he was appointed by the Academic Association of chemists and metallurgists at the Polytechnic School Aachen, later Corps Montania Aachen, an honorary member. In 1890 he moved to a chair at the University of Rostock.

His field of work was particularly the chemistry of organic phosphorus compounds, to which he gave fundamental contributions. According to him, by him parallel with Alexander Arbuzov (1877-1968) discovered the Michaelis- Arbuzov reaction named.

Awards

The Cotenius Medal of the Leopoldina he received in 1880.
