August Philip of Limburg Stirum

Damian August Philipp Karl Count von Limburg- Stirum ( born March 16, 1721 † February 26, 1797 at Castle Freudenhain in Passau) was from 1770 to 1797 Prince-Bishop of Speyer.

Life

His mother was Amalia Maria Elisabetha, born Countess von Schönborn, sister of the Prince Bishop Damian Hugo von Schönborn, the builder of the prince-bishop's residence in Bruchsal. The father's name was Otto Ernst von Limburg- Stirum, son of Field Marshal Hermann Otto II of Limburg- Styrum, from the old Counts of Limburg - Stirum.

At the age of eight years August von Limburg- Stirum received on 6 December 1729 tonsure and the four minor orders. A year later, on December 6, 1730, he was promoted by his uncle, the Prince-Bishop Damian Hugo von Schönborn, for Domicellar of Speyer. On July 21, 1732 he took the oath.

Limburg- Stirum began in 1742 to study theology in Rome, but due to the high mortality rate in the city, he put down the July 15, 1743 continued his studies in Würzburg.

On November 3, 1753 he was sworn in and admitted to the subdeacon of the cathedral chapter at Speyer, two years later he became dean. As the successor Franz Christoph von Hutten he was appointed on May 25, 1770 to the bishop.

During his tenure, Limburg- Stirum urged the construction of a new city wall around Bruchsal, although they did not offer any more protection against the new weapons technology. To raise funds, he ordered city wide raids on for valuables. However, these were unsuccessful, so he had to abandon his plan. Remnants of the partially completed city wall can still be seen today.

His social welfare brought the city an orphan, a discipline and a poor house and hospital and Latin School.

Threatened by the French revolutionary army, he fled on 1 October 1792. He stopped off in Veitshoechheim, Augsburg and Freising and returned to Bruchsal on April 20, 1793. Three years later, on September 21, 1795, he was again on the run from French soldiers. He moved to Freising and later to Passau.

At noon on February 26, 1797 the Prince-Bishop died at Castle Freudenhain and was buried in the Capuchin Church in Freudenhain. Church and grave were soon destroyed it in the throes of revolution. His heart was, however, transferred to Bruchsal already on 21 March 1797 and since then rests in a silver urn on the stone pedestal in front of the coffin Hutten in the tomb of the Prince Bishops in the baroque church St. Peter.
