Austin Murphy

Austin John Murphy ( born June 17, 1927 in North Charleroi, Washington County, Pennsylvania ) is a former American politician. Between 1977 and 1995 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Austin Murphy attended the public schools in New London ( Connecticut ) and thereafter until 1944, the Charleroi High School. During the final phase of World War II he served in the years 1944-1946 in the United States Marine Corps. Then he studied until 1949 at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. After a subsequent law studies at the University of Pittsburgh and his 1953 was admitted to the bar he began in Washington ( Pennsylvania) to work in this profession. In the years 1956 and 1957 he was deputy district attorney in the local Washington County. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1959 and 1971 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania; 1971 to 1977 he was a member of the State Senate. In the years 1984 and 1988, he participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions relevant.

In the congressional elections of 1976, Murphy was in the 22nd electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1977. After eight re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1995 nine legislative sessions. Since 1993, he represented the 20th district where his state.

Since 1990, Austin Murphy fell into negative headlines. He was accused by a rival candidate of a double life, but against what he protested. He was later reprimanded by the Congress government of electoral fraud and misuse of funds. This led to his decision not to run in 1994. In May 1999, he was indicted for fraud and conspiracy. It dealt with were scams letter elections. Finally, most of the charges were dropped. There was only an accusation of election fraud letter left; for this he was sentenced to six months in prison on probation and 50 hours of community service.
