Azuga

Azuga is a city in Prahova county in the Wallachia region of Romania.

Location

Azuga is located in the upper valley of the river Prahova. West of the village is situated the Bucegi, east of the Baiu Mountains.

History

The region of present-day town has long been used by pastoralists. The settlement was founded in around 1800 and adopted by the convenient location on one of the main Carpathian passes - the Predeal Pass - a rapid upswing. From 1830 industrial enterprises flourished in the town. 1879 was the place railway connection.

In the 20th century Azuga developed into a tourist resort, with particular winter sport plays a significant role. 1948 Azuga was declared a city.

Population

Through the development of industry and tourism, the population increased continuously until the revolution of 1989; 1956 1992 6487 3732 residents were counted. Since then, the population decreases.

Traffic

Azuga is located on the mountain road between Bucharest and Brasov, the European Route equals 60. On the western edge is a train station on the railway line Ploieşti - Braşov.

Attractions

Azuga is the starting point for walks in the Bucegi and the Baiu Mountains.
