Bailén

Bailen is a Spanish municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia. It is located on the A-4 motorway and is a location of ceramic production, herbs and wine cultivation and edible oil production. Although located in the interior, it is a tourist destination due to its historical importance.

History

The Romans managed to make the Carthaginians and their allies in Baecula, today Bailen. Hasdrubal Barcas left 208 BC after the first battle of Baecula against the troops of Scipio the Elder the battlefield as a loser.

From 18 to 22 July 1808, the city was the site of the largest battle in the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars, the Battle of Bailen.
