Baillif

Baillif is a municipality with 5094 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the south western peninsula of Basse- Terre French overseas departments of Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles.

Geography

The municipality is located in the west of the peninsula Basse- Terre and extends from the coast to the 1354 m high Grand Sans - Toucher. It is a suburb of the city of Basse- Terre. The place name comes from Robert Baillif, one of the first residents of the community back. The place is located in the center of the National Park of Guadeloupe.

Attractions

Named after the Dominican missionary Père Labat ruined tower is classified as a Monument Historique Inscrit. The tower was built in the establishment phase of the first village in the late 17th century.

  • The French violinist, composer and conductor Joseph Bologne, called the Chevalier de Saint Georges (1745-1799), was born in Baillif.
