Balatongyörök

Balatongyörök [ bɒlɒtonɟørøk ] is a town on the northwestern shore of Lake Balaton ( Balaton ) in Zala county in Hungary. Balatongyörök is located on the E71, about 8 kilometers east of the town of Keszthely and 20 kilometers from the airport Sármellék. Covering an area of ​​37.59 km ² live about 1,000 inhabitants (as of 2009).

History

Originally, the only place in the Balaton street was at the lake and had been around the turn of the century in 1900 first bathing tourists. The clean, green and situated in a quiet area place has still the traditional houses, especially in the Kossuth Lajos utca. Balatongyörök was from 19 to about the middle of the 20th century, a favorite place for artists and other celebrities. From this period dates the residential street Petőfi Sándor utca, a lime avenue, which was created in 1910. Located on the eastern outskirts viewpoint " Szépkilátó " probably offers one of the most beautiful views of the lake Balaton.

However, the aerial view shows only a tourist resort located about 700 meters east of Balatongyörök.

Attractions

The place has a small train station and a beach, and is connected by its pier with boat dock on the regular boat links to the Lake Balaton. To the east of the village lies a golf course. The Balaton bicycle route through the town.

Three kilometers west of Balatongyörök, was on the 134 meter high hill Saint Michael, according to legend, built as a thanks to the rescue in 1739 of 40 fishermen from the icy Lake Balaton, one of these votive chapel.
