Balkány is a town in Szabolcs -Szatmár -Bereg county in eastern Hungary.

Geography

Balkány has on 89.99 km ², a population of 6,852 inhabitants ( 2005). The city is located about 28 km southeast of Nyíregyháza and 40 km northeast of Debrecen. Radius Balkány are several cities such as Biri, Geszteréd, Bököny, Szakoly and Nyírmihálydi.

Climate

History

Balkány was first mentioned in 1214. The city's name probably comes from the Turkish and means swamp. The first ruler of the area were members of the noble family Good - Keled who received the area by the King. Accordingly, the territory was divided in the family, the western part went to Paul ( Pál ) and Thomas ( Tamas ), the eastern Paul's son, Lorenz ( Lőrincz ). During the attacks of the Turkic peoples and other nomadic tribes, the city lost large parts of their population. In the 18th century, the population again rose sharply in 1839, the city was with 3006 inhabitants, the largest in the area.
