The heavily glaciated Balmhorn is at an altitude of 3'698 m above sea level. M. the highest mountain in the eponymous Balmhorngruppe in the western Bernese Alps. The steep Balmhorngletscher flows northward against the Gasterental, the black glacier westward direction from Gemmiweg. Below the east wall are the Lötschenpass and the solder glacier. With only a little lower, westerly Altels the Balmhorn a sharp snow ridge is connected, which is exceeded by good climbers often. Both peaks form a highly attractive conclusion of the Kander Valley. The group next to it are still the cow horn and the chli (small ) cattle horn.

The Balmhorngipfel is the highest point of the municipality in the district of Frutigen Kandersteg in the Swiss canton of Bern. The cantonal border between Bern and the Valais extends over Balmhorn and Altels. The north side of the massif drained by Kander, the Aare and Rhine into the North Sea, the south side of the Rhone into the Mediterranean.

The normal route to the Balmhorn leads from the Spittelmatte on Gemmiweg over the Black Glacier and the Jagged Ridge to the summit. As a base to offer to the guest house Schwarenbach, where many famous people have (eg Mark Twain ) spent the night. The normal route is also committed by ski mountaineers in the winter often. Further increases are derived from the Balmhornhütte above the Gasterentals over the Wildelsigengrat or the north wall and on the Gitzifurgge over the Gitzigrat ( south-east ) to the summit.
