Bardhaman district
Bardhaman ( Bengali: বর্ধমান, Bardhaman ) is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Seat of the district administration, the city is Bardhaman.
Geography
The district Bardhaman extends over an area of 7024 km ² and has a population of 6,895,514 inhabitants ( 2001 census ). It is bordered by the districts of West Bengal Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, Hooghly, Bankura and Purulia, as well as the state of Jharkhand. Bardhaman consists of the six sub-divisions, Asansol, Bardhaman Sadar (North ), Bardhaman Sadar (South ), Durgapur, Kalna and Katwa.
The east of the district is part of the Gangetic plain, whose estuary Bhagirathi forms the border with the neighboring district of Nadia. The West is dominated by the river Damodar, which is the border south to the district Bankura. The northern border of the district Birbhum forms of river Ajay.
Economy
Bardhaman is one of the economically advanced areas of West Bengal. The East, with its fertile alluvial particular the Bhagirathi is a productive agricultural region with a predominantly rice cultivation. The West is rich in mineral resources such as coal and ore since the beginning of the 19th century is here operated at Raniganj coal mining. On river Damodar, the iron and steel and construction industry has settled. In Durgapur and Dishergarh are power plants.
Bardhaman is provided by the National Highway 2 ( Grand Trunk Road) and its position on the railway line Delhi- Kolkata with relatively good infrastructure.
